26 text from "The Decendents of Thomas Hutchinson"

"In today's society, it is now illegal for first cousins to marry one another, because of our understanding of the laws of heredity. We tend to forget that the Mendelian theories of heredity date back only to the 1800's. Thus, in 1724, when Elijah married his first cousin, Mary Hutchinson, no one considered their marriage as any different from any other marriage. As in all the early settlements of America, Southold had many marriages between cousins."
